Why Hiring Veterans is the Best Business Decision You’ll Ever Make: Insights from a Soldier-Turned-Law Student.

Updated: Jun 5, 2024

Introduction: Let's face it—hiring is tough. You want someone reliable, hardworking, and who can handle pressure without breaking a sweat. As an Army veteran, former sniper, and proud holder of a Business Administration degree, I've seen the magic that veterans can bring to the workplace. Trust me, hiring veterans isn’t just a good deed; it’s a business-savvy move. Let’s dive into why veterans are the secret sauce your company needs.

1. Strong Work Ethic: Remember that time you hit snooze five times? Yeah, veterans don’t do that. For 16 years, I was regularly standing in formation by 6:30 AM, saluting the flag, and getting ready to start the day with at least an hour's worth of physical fitness activities. Trust me, nothing builds a strong work ethic like doing push-ups before sunrise while your friends back home are still dreaming about their morning coffee.

But let’s keep it real—I'm not saying every veteran is going to have the perfect work ethic. I've seen my fair share of soldiers who weren’t worth a damn, the ones who could mess up a two-car parade. However, in general, you have better odds with a veteran. So, while you might not always strike gold, chances are, you'll find someone who can handle a bit of pressure and responsibility. And if nothing else, they'll definitely know, or should know, how to be on time!

2. Leadership and Teamwork: In the military, you don’t get to choose your team, but you sure as heck learn to lead and work with them. Veterans have led diverse groups in high-stress situations, making them natural leaders and team players. I was 20 years old when I was part of the invasion of Iraq in 2003, and I was already a leader responsible for a team of four. This level of responsibility at such a young age is unparalleled and provides incredible experience to bring to any team.

This is where veterans are likely to excel over similarly situated civilians. Soldiers gain leadership experience quickly, and those who have served beyond a short initial enlistment have likely attended at least one of the various leadership schools the military offers for soldier development. These experiences forge strong leadership and teamwork skills that are crucial for growth and innovation in any business setting. My degree in business administration taught me the theory of effective leadership and teamwork, but veterans bring these skills in spades, honed through real-world, high-pressure situations.

3. Adaptability and Resilience: Veterans are the MacGyvers of the working world—they can adapt to anything. Whether it’s a last-minute project change or a complete shift in strategy, veterans stay cool under pressure. This adaptability is a goldmine in today’s fast-paced business environment. My business studies emphasized the importance of adaptability, and veterans are experts at it.

4. Technical Skills and Specialized Training: From cybersecurity to logistics, veterans come with a wealth of technical skills and specialized training. However, the specific skills they bring are often highly dependent on what they did while in the military. As an infantryman, I used advanced weaponry, thermal optics, and basic computer technology. Someone who served in the cyber domain of the military would, of course, be more attuned to that type of tech. Similarly, mechanics in the military would have expertise in technical and mechanical systems.

Veterans are like the Swiss Army knives of the professional world, equipped with a diverse range of skills. I appreciate how these specialized skills can drive innovation and efficiency in a company. Plus, veterans are continuous learners, always ready to master new technologies, adapting quickly to the demands of the civilian workforce. Whether it's advanced IT systems or intricate mechanical equipment, veterans bring a depth of technical expertise that's invaluable to any business.

5. Strong Sense of Responsibility: Veterans have this uncanny ability to take responsibility seriously—like, really seriously. In the military, accountability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a way of life. This sense of duty translates to high professionalism and reliability in the workplace. In my experience, both in the military and business, this is a game-changer for organizational success.

6. Tax Incentives: Here’s something that’ll make your finance team do a happy dance: hiring veterans can bring tax benefits. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) provides incentives to employers who hire veterans, especially those with service-connected disabilities. This can significantly cut down on hiring and training costs. Who doesn’t love a good tax break?

7. Enhanced Diversity and Inclusion: Veterans come from all walks of life and bring unique perspectives to the table. Hiring them enhances diversity and fosters a more inclusive work environment. Diverse teams are proven to be more creative and effective in problem-solving.

And let me tell you, the mix can be quite comical sometimes. Imagine a soldier who never left the bounds of a big city mixing with a soldier who has never been off a farm. You've got one guy who thinks "hunting" means finding a good bagel place in Manhattan, and another who thinks it involves a deer stand and a camo jacket. Or picture a tech-savvy cyber soldier who can hack into systems mixing with an old-school infantryman who can dismantle an entire weapon blindfolded but struggles to set up a Wi-Fi router.

It's this blend of backgrounds and experiences that makes veterans uniquely equipped to work across a broad spectrum of people from varying walks of life. No matter the scenario, you’re bound to get someone who has worked with diverse teams, making them adept at navigating and leveraging different perspectives to solve problems. So, when you hire veterans, you’re not just getting employees—you’re getting a wealth of diverse experiences and viewpoints that can significantly enhance your business's creativity and effectiveness.

8. Commitment to Service: Veterans have a deep-rooted commitment to service. This dedication extends beyond their military careers and into their civilian roles. Companies benefit from their loyalty and commitment to the organization’s mission and values.

Hiring veterans is a no-brainer. They bring unparalleled skills, experience, and dedication to the workplace. By tapping into their unique strengths, companies can boost productivity, foster a positive work culture, and gain a competitive edge. As someone with both military and business experience, I can’t emphasize enough the strategic advantage of bringing veterans on board.
